Now Available on DVD – Widely Acclaimed THE GRACE LEE PROJECT

In honor of Asian/Pacific Islander American (APIA) Heritage Month, Women Make Movies is pleased to announce the eagerly awaited DVD release of two of our most successful titles: Grace Lee’s THE GRACE LEE PROJECT and Lisa Denker and Charlotte Lagarde’s HEART OF THE SEA: KAPOLIOKA’EHUKAI.

THE GRACE LEE PROJECT opened to rave reviews in theatrical runs in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and recently enjoyed its broadcast premiere on the Sundance Channel. HEART OF THE SEA: KAPOLIOKA’EHUKAI is the winner of the prestigious Audience Award on Independent Lens, public television’s Emmy Award-winning independent film series.

“We are thrilled to be releasing these extraordinary films on DVD,” says Debra Zimmerman, WMM Executive Director. “They are both vibrant celebrations of the lives of Asian/Pacific Islander American women, and we are proud to have this chance to offer them to the public.”

When award-winning Korean-American filmmaker Grace Lee was growing up in Missouri, she was the only Grace Lee she knew. In New York and California, however, everyone she met seemed to know “another Grace Lee.” But why did they assume that all Grace Lees were reserved, dutiful, piano-playing bookworms? On a search to find out “who is Grace Lee?,” the filmmaker takes us through a clever, highly unscientific, and entertaining investigation into all those Grace Lees who break the mold – from a fiery social activist to a rebel who tried to burn down her high school! From the filmmaker of American Zombie comes this funny and poignant indie hit that will touch the Grace Lee in all of us. With wit and charm, THE GRACE LEE PROJECT puts a hilarious spin on the eternal question “What’s in a name?”
